Where to start? I’ve known Chris since I was 19 and he was 20. I have so many memories - but the best memory now, is that our friendship had endured, through all the ups and downs over the years.
He was always bright, articulate, enthusiastic and an independent spirit. Very much his own person who didn’t suffer fools and told them so if they overstepped the mark, but Chris was also kind, sensitive and loyal to those he cared about. Though he could be the number one grouch if he didn’t like something or someone and was very stubborn if he thought he was in the right, but he was fair-minded too and willing to help anyone and would show compassion and empathy to those in need, whether family, friend or stranger.

I’ll miss his company, advice and his calmness in a crisis. Plus, I’ll also miss our long, involved and sometimes frankly silly conversations late at night, sat out in his favourite spot at the back of his house, in the tumbledown lean-to, among the random odds and ends that littered the shelves. We’d chat and debate all manner of topics and he wasn’t averse to a good old gossip either. The conversation would be accompanied by his favourite music of various kinds, with us occasionally singing along and an almost obligatory glass or two of his home-made wine. He also was an accomplished gardener of course and in my opinion grew the best tasting green beans I’d ever eaten

A complex character no doubt, but all the more interesting for it. Life was never boring when Chris was around. He loved to laugh and didn’t take life all that seriously, except his work and the love for his family. He was extraordinary proud of our two girls and rightly so and adored our grandchildren very much.

So, farewell my very best friend. It was an excellent adventure.
Love and hugs. May your energy finally roam free.
